What are package holidays and what makes them so safe?

Date posted: 22.07.2021

With the travel becoming more available, and news that from the 19 July, fully vaccinated UK travellers won’t have to quarantine when returning from Amber list countries, you might have found yourself dreaming about getting away.

ATOL protected package holidays are a great way to book a trip. You’ll be able to relax with the peace of mind that comes with knowing that your money is protected.

What are package holidays?

A package holiday is a combination of travel elements – e.g. a flight and hotel stay – that is sold by a travel company together in one inclusive price.

How am I protected?

ATOL protected

UK companies that sell package holiday which include a flight are legally required to register with ATOL.

ATOL protection means that if the travel company you booked with ceases trading, you will either get your money back, or, if you have already begun your holiday, be able to complete your trip at no extra cost.

When planning your trip, it’s important to remember that non-UK based travel companies selling package holidays do not offer the same levels of financial protection.

The collapse of the original Thomas Cook in 2019, clearly demonstrated the value of ATOL.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority launched the biggest repatriation in the UK’s peacetime history, flying home almost 150,000 travellers. We also managed the claims of 300,000 holidaymakers whose holidays had been cancelled.

Package travel rules

When you book a package holiday, you are also protected by rules that only apply to these types of holidays. Under these rules, when you book a package holiday with a travel company, the contents of that package are protected.

This means that if there is any significant change between what you booked and what you receive, then you’re entitled to a full refund from their travel company.

Can a non-package holiday ever be as financially secure?

While ATOL protected package holidays provide the best level of protection possible, there are other ways of booking trips.

Building your own holiday may give you greater flexibility than booking a package holiday, but always make sure your trip is financially protected.

Our top tips if you’re booking a holiday this summer are:

  1. Book an ATOL protected package holiday
  2. Follow the rules and requirements for entry to your destination
  3. Book on a credit card where possible for Section 75 protection under the Consumer Credit Act
  4. Take out travel insurance as soon as you book
  5. Keep up to date with UK Government travel advice and follow advice when returning
